Almond bounded through the forest's leafy undergrowth, bitter about her current situation. The trees loomed over her tiny head, frightening and mysterious. Everything seemed too big in this foreign place, and the little kit felt more helpless than she had ever felt before. All she wanted to do was lie safe and warm by her mother, or curl up on the lap of her twoleg. But they were both gone, and had left poor Almond alone in the world. "Mamaaaaa!" she cried, searching around, hoping that help would come. "I don't know what to do. It's really hard work, in this place, mama! I have to catch my own food, and it's really cold at night, and there's a lot of really scary cats here. What am I going to do, mama?"

Lithium had been wandering around aimlessly when she heard a voice. 'What am I going to do, mama?' That was all she could make out. Not in any particular hurry, the black she-cat stared at the crying kit. Her white tail-tip twitched. This little scrap wasn't her problem. She had carved out her own way, now this litle she-kit would have to too.
Lithium had been abandoned by her mother, and the now eight moon old she-cat had had her fill of rejection. Wouldn't being dumped by a kit be more then enough suffering and pain? She had already been turned down five times. . . Six times would kill her. Probably.
Besides, Lithium had already come into sight. Unless this kit had a bad sense of observation, or was blind, Lithium was doomed to be noticed. Oh well, let's get this rejection over with, shall we?

As Almond's eyes settled on a catlike shape, she jumped to her feet. "Mama, is that you?" She mewed hopefully, stepping towards the cat. Then she noticed the black pelt, and she shook with fear, her little eyes growing huge. She backed away slowly as her fluffy, cream colored fur stood up straight. "Please! Please don't eat me!" She sobbed pathetically, melting down into a sad little lump of fur. "I'm not tasty at all, I promise! Please!" The little kit let out a little sniffle. "All I wanna do is find my Mama! Please don't eat me!"

"I'm not going to eat you," sighed Lithium. "I know I'm hungry, but that that hungry." She looked at the kit with sudden interest, "Are you alone?" She asked, and couldn't help feeling sympathetic.

The trembling little kit started crying harder than ever. "The twolegs put me and my mama in the river, and now I can't find her!" she sobbed "And now I'm gonna get eated by a scary forest cat!"

Lithium tilted her head. So, the kit had not been abandoned after all... Not intentionally, anyway. "Hey now, you're not gonna be eaten." She considered comforting the little half pint, but touching and sharing each other's feelings wasn't Lithium's thing. So she let it drop.
The black she-cat sighed, "I'll help you find her, then. It's not like I have anything better to do..."
